Annie Lyden : Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize

Curator of Photography at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery Annie Lyden, introduces the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2013, which the gallery is hosting for the first time. The exhibition features 60 photographs, which were selected anonymously for inclusion by the judges, out of a over 5000 entires, by 2435 photographers. As well as featuring photos from established names, the exhibition also features works from emerging young talent, photography students and gifted amateurs.

Four photographers were shortlisted for this year’s prize: Anoush Abrar (born Iran, 1976) for Kofi Annan; Dorothea Deiss (born Germany, 1961) for The Twins; Spencer Murphy (born Britain, 1978) for Katie Walsh; and Giles Price (born Britain, 1973) for Kumbh Mela Pilgrim Mamta Dubey and infant. The winner of the £12,000 prize, sponsored by the international law firm Taylor Wessing, was Spencer Murphy’s photograph of Irish jockey Katie Walsh.

The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize is on at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, until the 26th May 2014.
